GLP-1s have become an online-first health conversation

The scale of the conversation shows just how far GLP-1s have moved into the mainstream. Our analysis uncovered almost 420,000 posts from more than 315,000 users, generating 6.2 million likes and an estimated 10 billion impressions. Conversation peaked between September 17 and 18, which highlights just how quickly interest around GLP-1s can surge when new developments arise.
GLP-1s are now being discussed across a wide range of online communities, from people sharing their experiences with the drugs to users debating their accessibility, risks and long-term impact.

The rise of weight-loss drugs on Instagram

The growing presence of GLP-1s in mainstream advertising is another sign of just how far they have entered popular culture. On Instagram, we came across sponsored content from services such as Noom and Fridays, both promoting access to GLP-1-based weight-loss programmes directly to consumers.

However, the trend extends well beyond companies selling the treatments themselves. In a sponsored post, health tech brand Withings partnered with Dr Terry Simpson MD to discuss the role of its health technology for people taking GLP-1s.

These examples show how GLP-1s are increasingly being woven into the wider consumer health landscape. What was once primarily a medical conversation is now appearing in advertising for weight-loss programmes, health technology and other consumer products, putting GLP-1s in front of audiences far beyond those actively seeking treatmentScreenshot 2026-09-23 at 16.08.31

On X, the conversation is taking a different turn

As GLP-1s become more accessible, the conversation around them is expanding. On X, users are discussing everything from access and affordability to potential side effects, lawsuits and long-term risks.

This was visible between September 17 and 18, when conversation peaked following Brazil's announcement that GLP-1 medications would be made available through its public healthcare system. The news generated a fresh wave of discussion around who should have access to the drugs, how they should be prescribed and what wider access could mean.

The spike is a useful illustration of how quickly developments around GLP-1s can reshape the online conversation. As these drugs move further into the mainstream, social monitoring can help identify the issues and narratives driving discussion as they emerge.

The gap between marketing and lived experience

Taken together, the conversations on Instagram and X reveal two very different sides of the GLP-1 boom. On Instagram, the focus is often on access, convenience and the promise of weight loss, with companies making treatment increasingly visible to consumers. On X, conversations are more likely to centre on personal experiences, potential side effects and emerging concerns.

This doesn't mean the two platforms represent completely separate audiences or narratives. But the contrast highlights how quickly the conversation can move from “How can I get it?” to “What happens when I do?”

What this means for brands and healthcare companies

As GLP-1s become more mainstream, the conversation around them is becoming harder to predict. New developments can quickly shift attention from access and weight loss to safety, side effects or public debate.

For brands and healthcare companies, monitoring these shifts is key to understanding how the category is evolving. Tracking the volume of conversation is only the starting point. Identifying the narratives driving it, the accounts amplifying them and how they spread across platforms can provide an earlier view of emerging reputational risks.
